What is Thai Massage

Thai massage is influenced by Indian and Southeast Asian traditions of medicine. The Originator of Thai massage and medicine is said to have been Shivago Komarpaj, believed to be Buddha's physician over 2,500 years ago according to Pāli Buddhist canon.

There is no clear evidence on which time period it was spread into Thailand but originally, Thai massage was used only for the nobles and the royals. After that, it began to gain popularity among the commoners. There are now two styles of Thai massage: the royal style and the commoner’s style.

The charm of Thai massage is the compression and massage of the muscles without using oil, which aims to treat physical symptoms. It can help healing the tensed muscle and help to stimulating the circulatory system so the blood flows easily. Thai massage is different from aromatherapy massage that uses fragrant oil.

On December 12, 2019, Thai massage was registered as a representative of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (Intangible Cultural Heritage) from UNESCO in Bogota, Republic of Colombia.
